Grateful for Gifts

As I stepped out onto the porch to feed the cat and get the newspaper, the beauty of winter in all its possibilities surrounded me.  Today,  I need offer nothing more than the words of Robert Frost, and a vision of what I saw.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

    Corinne,
The first book I bought with my own money, 8 yrs old: Complete Works of Robert Frost.
I still have that thick paperback, spine worn and full of favorite marks.
I now have a 1st edition hard copy, but just for keeps– I don’t open it.
I can recite many of his most known even if I’m 3 sheets drunk. People should avail themselves of the lesser known…it is all good. Sometimes he rhymed such metered grace. Other times he spoke sardonic prose. And he wrote great short stories in poetic form.

Happy b-day to me, hoping for more snow cover– without mountain security, much more snow is required.
    Thank you,
    L

    Late December Born

    Coughed from winter’s womb,
    as the mountain stands alone,
with the world around snowed in,
at last I feel at home.

    I walk my dog midnights
    in peace and unafraid.
    Silent sparkle knows no bounds.
For this once, I am made.
